There is something about Fallen London that is so charming, in such a weird, creepy, fantasy-horror sort of way.
I’m attending an illegal spider fighting ring underneath a pub down the docks, and obviously I have the option to bet on the contenders. Of which there are four, described thusly:
Bet on Millie, the Moloch Street Mangler. A gargantuan beast, half the height of a man and twice as hairy. She lumbers into the ring on seven bristling legs. The eighth is a mere stump, capped with a steel hook.
Bet on Florence, the Stackside Spinner. The local champion, Florence, is a fleet-footed Wolfstack bruiser who ensnares her victims in ropes of sticky silk.
Bet on Daphne, The Graveside Creeper. Raised on the blood of tomb-colonists, Daphne is slow and ponderous and bandaged, but supposedly impossible to kill.
Bet on Alonzo, Scourge of the Marshes. He doesn't look like much. If a beer-mug fell on him, that would probably be it for the night. But they say his venom can burn holes in lead.
And I just … Those are four characters immediately sketched in about as many sentences. They’re spiders, we’re in a weird-as-hell victorian cosmic horror game, but they’re so clearly and perfectly and immediately sketched.
And obviously I’m betting on Daphne, and will continue to bet on Daphne, whether she wins or not, because as far as characters go, I will always put my money on the slow, battered, beat-to-shit old girl who’s hanging on by sheer grit but who might still know a few things that younger, fitter, more ostensibly dangerous contenders might not. Heh.
Here’s for the Graveside Creeper! I’m rooting for you, girl!

A bit random but this a Fallen London map appreciation post because this piece of art is utterly enchanting. While I’m playing and need to switch locations, half the time I spend a few minutes just staring in wonder. The way everything slots together is amazing, all the details are amazing. The frickin windows of the Royal Beth have their curtains in different positions. All the boards on the windows of the Shuttered Palace are placed differently. The walkways and staircases to the Flit are so well done. Crates are scattered around Wolfstack Docks. Roofs and walls have little imperfections. Some buildings are more dilapidated than others. Every doorway, window, tree, mushroom, awning, stalagmite… I cannot imagine how long this took.
Idk, I was just thinking about this and wanted to get my thoughts out somewhere. I’m sure something like this has been said before but I don’t care. Thank You Fallen London for having a gorgeous cityscape.

Most londoners know Hiram by reputation, but only some people know he's soulless. The most popular theories about his deal are:
He sold his soul for immortality. Most of his old acquaintances are sure of it.
He sold his soul for wealth. Some tracklayers are convinced that the GHR was part of the deal.
He sold his soul to bring back his spouse. Word at the docks is that Morgan's ship disappeared years ago and suddenly reappered at Wolfstack more than a decade after. Hiram was one of the first people allowed on board.
He must have done something to get so good at gambling, there's no way he's that lucky. (Unfortunately for everyone he is. But only at random. And he cheats a lot)
A few spies think that he sold his soul for a non-specified power move in the future. He always seems to be waiting for something.
Young bohemians believe that he never sold his soul but the Deviless really really wants it for some reason so she chose to pester him about it forever. (They have no way of knowing that this is almost exactly what happened)
He made a deal with Virginia for political power. Even some devils believe this one. (Which is surprisingly the farthest away from the truth)
#hiram and virginia have a lot of unspoken deals but something written? AND legally binding? they Do Not trust each other enough for that#she did try to take his soul back in the day tho (it can happen in motr)#hiram hargrave

[A series of freshly printed fliers have been posted all around Veilgarden, Wolfstack Docks, and Watchmaker’s Hill. The paper they’ve been printed on is crisp, and the fliers are decorated with small labeled diagrams of what appear to be Correspondence-powered hot water bottles and heated blankets, though no sigils are visible. A large stamp at the top of each page proclaims the following as the work of Beverley & Beverley Engineering & Correspondency Solutions. You have never heard of this company before in your life.]
Physical pains that are untouched by laudanum, honey, etc. may be eased by heating elements. B&BE&CS designs require no fuel, no oil, and no dangerous toxins to be handled by the customer. Simply strike the stick of flint (as shown in diagram 2.A) and enjoy insulated warm comfort for up to 90 operating hours. A variety of sizes as well as replacement heating elements are available, including but not limited to blankets, glove & boot warmers, hot water bottles, heating pads, and mattress warmers. Payment accepted in: Rostygold, Moon Pearls, Jade, Souls. Please send all enquiries to the specified P.O. Box. Mail order only.
[Despite the less than stellar persuasive language, the designs seem rather sound… and it does get rather drafty down here.]
#zeeposting#officer beverley#my fic#a commingling of radiences#oh yeah in other news -#Bev has started a mail order business !#it’s very silly but he & his boyfriend are having fun#they’re selling fire hazards I mean#heated blankets and automatic hot water bottles

english vermillion and tumbleweed for alexandria :O
english vermillion: if you could give them a custom lodgings, what would it be?
Berth Aboard the Jasiri: A swift, sturdy craft, with a captain’s cabin that is comfortable without being ostentatious. In your humble opinion, there is no better ship to have at your side when facing the zee.
tumbleweed: what stats would they provide as an in-game companion? how would you acquire them?

begin the story of the dauntless captain when your docks + revolutionaries renown are both at 15. you meet Alexandria at Wolfstack Docks, and from there he pops up once at every port on the zee and enlists your help with some small strange task in exchange for payment in moon pearls/jade/other small currency items, and some zee ztories. gradually, you figure out that he is smuggling various items for the calendar council and the widow, and has been getting you to help.
once you’ve helped Alexandria at every location, you can confront her in parabola with what you know. you then have the choice of informing the constables about what she’s doing. if you do that, you receive favors and material rewards from the constables, and lose favor with the docks and the revolutionaries. if you choose not to rat on her and instead to keep helping her, you get her as a companion and renown and favors with the docks and revolutionaries.
a new zee dream is unlocked, either once you get Alexandria as a companion or when you hear news of him evading capture by fleeing to Polythreme (depending on what you picked). “the dauntless dreamer” cards are drawn with standard frequency in home waters, and give the quality “western wind” which functions like the other wind qualities once back in London. but if you chose to rat on Alexandria, the dauntless dreamer cards will increase your nightmares when at zee. if you chose to help, your nightmares get reduced instead.

OC SMASH OR PASS
Rules: pretty self explanatory. include physical descriptions or pics, and propaganda. the “other” label can be used for “sexuality misalignment” (ie: oc is femme and you’re gay, vice versa or you aren’t into smashing but a specific thing you wanna do with them like perhaps hug or study them under a microscope idc).
Thanks for tagging me for this @viric-dreams and @the-dye-stained-socialite --and thanks for your patience now that i can finally get to it!
Silvia Salcedo, the Radical Sonneteer
Age: 23
Gender: Woman (she/they)
Sexuality: extremely alloromantic lesbian

middle image by the incomparable @the-clay-quarters // now featuring cool wax wind scars >:p
✅Pros:
a femme-inineomenon! great fashion sense, luxurious hair she'd love for you to touch (body hair too!!)
super switchy--can be high-handed and demanding, or sweet and obliging; opinionated always. will sub, dom, give, or receive, especially enjoys service topping and power bottoming; will try to turn the tables at least once during your encounter
ticklish and squirmy
makes you feel like you're doing an amazing job, either with direct praise or just her reactions
there is no escape from the big brown eyes
will call you cute things in Spanish
devotedly administers aftercare <3
😐Beige flags:
lesbian and not into fellas
partnered (against all odds)
won't fuck anyone who is also fucking one of her father figures 💀
🚩Cons:
extremely unchill: high-strung, nervy, will not fucking shut up
WILL fall in love with you for a week if she's fucked you. after that week she'll be fine but it'll be awkward in the meantime
will probably cry post coitus
clingy
not yet comfortable in her polyamory
low standards. If she lets you hit it, that's not much of an accomplishment!
will subject you to a rant about whatever story her newspaper is working on (usually mediocre reviews of mediocre plays)
she's just kind of a loser idk you guys
#i did not create silvia while thinking about smashability#i created her to be a loser you reluctantly find endearing after a while#so i'm fascinated to see the results#personally i'd pass. sorry queen you're exhausting#silvia salcedo#oc smash or pass

[London, Wolfstack's Docks. You disembark the ship that brought you back. You pick up an abandoned newspaper.]

The Wolfstack Massacre
Summary: Marie gathers the neddy-men in the Bazaar side-streets, and delivers a speech which incites a battle on Wolfstack Docks. Contents include strong fascist themes, incitement of violence, anti-revolutionary sentiment, and described non-graphic violence at the end.

The Might, Reborn
Ellery's shitty little ship has disappeared for a while. She's not in the docks, but her Captain Hart is safely in London, clearly not lost or drowning. Interrogation of her clay Zailors earns nothing but silence on the matter, but investigation into the local ship manifests make no mention of the boat having been lost.
When it comes out of drydock, The Might of the Frail is something to behold. Her full name is on her side, freshly painted --just like the rest of her. Much like her Captain, she has begun her story anew, dangerous, strong, a new force to behold in Wolfstack's Docks.
She, and her Captain Hart, demand your respect.
